Longpi Teapot

Longpi Black Pottery, Manipur, India

With its open, rounded body and cane-wrapped handle, the Longpi Teapot is as much a sculpture as a teapot. Its deep black is polished smooth by hand, with a soft sheen that catches the light, and it holds heat long after the tea is poured.

Its rounded form softens a hard-edged shelf or table. Give it space around it, so its silhouette can be read as a shape.

9.5" L x 2.5" W x 6" H · Weight: approx. 500 g

A craft carried in the hills of Manipur for around 4,000 years. Ground black stone and clay, shaped by hand without a potter’s wheel and fired in an open pit in Longpi village.

Each piece is made by hand, so its shape, colour and finish will vary slightly from the photos.

Its worth is in the years of effort and patience it took to master the skill, and the generations who kept it alive.

Every piece is priced by the depth of its craft:

Rarity: the number of makers who still carry the craft.

Process: the stages, days and skill it takes to bring a single piece from raw material to finished form.

Material: natural stone, clay or fibre, often drawn from the land around the makers.

Age: how long the tradition has survived, for centuries and in some cases thousands of years.

Handwork: the hands a piece passes through, from shaping to finishing.

Origin: a GI tag where granted, India’s legal mark of where a craft belongs.

The maker: every price is set so the artisan is paid fairly for their mastery. A cheaper version of the same shape usually means someone was paid less, very often the maker.

Food safe. Longpi has long been used to cook and serve. Hand wash in warm water with a soft brush. Avoid harsh detergents and long soaking. Keep the cane handle dry. Dry completely before storing. Not for the dishwasher.
